In order to understand the importance of Allentown auto dealers and their significance on the city, a little background on The Queen City can come in handy.
The town centre of what is today known as Allentown was founded in 1762 by a wealthy shipping merchant named, you guessed it, William Allen. The property was part of a 5,000 acre plot that Allen had purchased from business partner Joseph Turner. Turner had, in turn, bought the property from the son of William Penn, Thomas Penn. Allen’s plan was for the property to become a commercial centre because of its close proximity to Philadelphia.
With the arrival of the Lehigh Canal, the town core of Allentown became an industrial player and became a major centre for heavy industry and manufacturing. The local iron industry brought many jobs to the city. The railroad also employed a good number of people and the town’s breweries were legendary.
Unfortunately, the period of rapid economic growth in the region was brought to a halt by the Long Depression and the Panic of 1873. Fast-forward to today and most of Allentown’s economy is based on the service industry, with many jobs coming from the heavy industrial manufacturing sector. Mack Trucks moved to Allentown in 1905 and continues there to this day, continuing the trend.
So it’s probably no surprise that Allentown auto dealers would go through the ups and downs that any proud town’s dealerships would. From the Honda dealer to the other car dealership outlets, Allentown’s long history maintains a sense of pride amongst the auto sellers and continues through to this day.
